16.3.66 (Formerly listed under
Partly workshops, residential, box office for concert hall and
part used as merchants for animal feed. Formerly maltings. Dated
on key stone 1859; also dated at rear on key of arch 1903.
Mainly 3 storeys. A mixture of red and gault brick with slate,
pantile and corrugated asbestos roofs of varying heights. The
fenestration is varied alternating between 3 light louvres
between brick piers, and sashes in flush frames with glazing
bars. Cement stucco arches over sashes and brick segmental
arches over louvres. The building is pierced by two semi-
circular brick arches at ground floor level. The southern most
arch and entrance block has 3 bays 1:2:1 with 3 light C16 style
windows: fixed lights with glazing bars,timber mullions and
transomes. Over the arch is a clock. The block has crow stepped
gables in brick with moulded brick chimneys. There is a bell
turret with finial axil with ridge. Most eaves have dentil
courses. There are 3 lucams and several timber clad structures
together with the original drying kiln. There are 3 external
stairs leading to second and third floors with access to boarded
doors. Range at rear dated 1903 not of special interest.
Considered to be the largest maltings in Suffolk.
