9/91 Nos. 1 & 2 The Almshouses


Originally one house, now 2 almshouses. C16; converted into almshouses 1891.
Attached to the rear is a small probably C17 outbuilding, now disused. Timber
framed core, now almost entirely cased in red brick, with panels of
herringbone brickwork to the upper part of the facade; pantiled roof. Single
storey and attic. 3 windows, 2-light casements; No.1 has a partly glazed
boarded and battened door, No.2 a 2-panel door; 2 gabled dormers; internal
stack. No.1 has some exposed C16 joists. A stone shield on the facade is
inscribed "Home for the Aged. In memory of Dorothea Pike Scrivener and Mabel
Levett Scrivener E.M.L 1891 E.L.S'
