3/25 FitzGerald Mausoleum
in the Churchyard of
St Michael
G.V. II
Mausoleum. Mid-Cl9. Knapped flint with ashlar dressings. Single storey,
half-sunk. East face: 5 steps leading down into area with walling of
knapped flint at either side and ashlar coping. Central double doors with
ashlar surround having pillars with moulded bases and foliate capitals. The
archway has a hollow chamfer containing square-flower ornaments. Weathered
inscription to voussoirs above reading:

Lord (illegible) Receive my Spirit.

Gablet above containing a blank shield. Pyramidal roof above this of
ashlar blocks simulating tiles. South face: similar central gable
containing a cross-shaped light. North and west fronts: similar, save that
the north face, was damaged at the time of the re-survey (1987), the
knapped flint facing having fallen off at left revealing the brick walling
beneath. Set of cast iron railings and gates surrounding the area and body
of the mausoleum, having circular posts with fleur-de-lys finials at the
corners.
