Description

TM 14 NE RUSHMERE ST. ANDREW

3/12 Hill Farmhouse
-

- II

Farmhouse. Mid C16 with alterations of early C17 and C19. Perhaps originally
a 2-cell house extended at either end in early C17. 2 storeys. Timber-framed
and pebble-dashed. Plaintiled roof with internal and end chimneys of red
brick. Casement windows of 3 and 4 lights, most with leaded lights. Those at
ground floor have transomes; some are perhaps of C18, but all much renewed
late Cl9 or early C20. Early C19 entrance door with 5 sunk and beaded panels;
broad, finely-reeded architrave. Flat-roofed canopy on fluted columns,
probably a later addition. In the hall is a heavy C16 1st floor structure; to
the left of the hall a parlour cell was added early C17. The parlour ceiling
has a moulded bridging joist and some C17 plasterwork. A further cell was
added C17 to the service end, and the whole building reroofed, with 2 tiers of
butt-purlins to each slope, the upper tier wind-braced. Back-to-back
fireplaces were inserted into hall and parlour. Alterations were made to the
service end, and an outshut added to rear in C18 or early C19.
