TM 15 SE WITNESHAM HALL LANE

1/45 No.1, and No.2 Millfield
- Cottage

2 houses, originally one. Mid C16, subdivided and altered C19; further
alterations made c.1980. 2 storeys. Probably a 2-cell house, No.1 comprising
the service cell( with cross-wing added to front in C17), and No.2 comprising
the hall. Timber-framed and plastered. Pantiled roofs with internal and
external chimneys of red brick. C20 small-paned casements. Boarded entrance
doors with gabled pantiled canopies on brackets. No.2 has good arch-braced
close-studding with evidence for unglazed windows. Plain clasped purlin roof
and clamped upper floor with chamfered joists. The wide hall fireplace has a
deep cambered lintel. To right of the cross-wing abutting Mill Lane is a
large C17 external chimney.
