Description

The following item shall be added:

TM 37 NE WALPOLE THE STREET

7/144 Forty Winks
(formerly included as the
11.7.80 Thatched Cottage)

GV II

Cottage. Probably C17 or early C18, possibly with earlier origins and with
C19 alterations and extension. Plastered timber frame, partly faced and
extended in brick (painted). Thatched roof with gabled ends. Lateral stack
at rear of main range with circa C19 brick shaft.

Plan: Small single storey and attic 2-room plan cottage with a doorway at the
front left. The right hand (east) end is either an extension or has been
faced in brick when the single storey outshut was built at the back in the
C19. It is not clear whether the lateral stack at the rear of the main range
heats the outshut or the main range.

Exterior: 1 storey and attic. Asymetrical 2-window south front. C20 2 and
3-light casements. Doorway to left with C20 door. The gable ends also have
C20 2-light casements. Around the back a single storey painted brick outshut
with a pantile lean-to roof and C20 casements.

Interior not inspected. The former list description (1980) mentions "stopped
chamfered beams to ground floor".
