Artillery fort, 1711, remodelled c1871, on site of fort of 1540-5, rebuilt
1624. C18 work in red brick, C19 build of yellow brick faced externally with
granite. Irregular pentagon with angle bastions. South west side altered
1871 to form casement battery for 6 guns; semicircular gorge projected into
earlier parade. North east entrance; slightly projecting brick gateway with
embattled turrets. Blocked doorway, 2 upper stage loops. INTERIOR: Granite
archway, keystone dated 1875. Originally built to guard Harwich Harbour.
