Description

TM 26 SE FRAMLINGHAM SAXMUNDHAM ROAD

2/115 Moat Farmhouse
-

GV II

Farmhouse. Early C16 and early C17. 1½ storeys to older part; 2 storeys and
attics to later addition. Timber-framed and rendered with C20 concrete
plaintiles; concrete pantiles to the front slope of the earlier range. An
internal chimney-stack with a square shaft, moulded string-course and central
projecting pilaster-strip. Various casement windows, mainly 3-light, with a
single horizontal bar to lights. The older range retains 2½ bays of a small
house with a 2-bay open hall: the roof, with clasped purlins, no principals,
and deep, cambered collars, is heavily smoke-blackened around the open truss,
and sporadically in the rest of the roof. 3 tie-beams have been cut away, and
a section of wallplate along the back wall, with housings for studding and a
4-light diamond-mullioned window, has been turned 90°. An additional bay
beyond the hall originally contained a dairy with a cheese chamber above. The
C17 range is a typical parlour extension with original upper ceiling and
attic: ovolo-moulding to main ground floor ceiling-beam. A C20 extension in
front of this range.
