TM 26 SE FRAMLINGHAM SAXTEAD ROAD
2/119 Saxtead Lodge
House. Early C16 and early C19. 2 storeys to front range; 2 storeys and
attics to part of rear; complex form. Early C19 front range in white brick
with hipped slate roof and paired bracketed cornice. Small-paned sash windows
in deep reveals with gauged heads; a blank panel in one gable. Tuscan
portico: fluted columns and pilasters, plain entablature; 6-panelled fielded
door with panelled linings. A 4-bay timber-framed and rendered rear range,
with plaintiled roof, has a 3-cell plan: service-end partition with the
evidence for 2 doorways with arched heads, but the rooms themselves have been
remodelled and made into one with a later end chimney-stack. A 2-bay central
room with exposed ceiling; chamfered main beam with pyramid stops, shaped
heads to posts; remains of several diamond-mullioned windows on ground and
first floors; reversed braces. Cambered tie-beams; plain crown-post roof, the
crown-post braced 4 ways at the head with thin braces, the 2 to the collar
cranked. There is light but distinct evidence of smoke-blackening in the
roof, and one bay appears to have been a smoke-bay with a later inserted
chimney-stack. At right-angles to this timber-framed range, and parallel with
the front, is an early C19 building, originally a small separate cottage, but
now linked with the remainder of the house: 2 storeys; colour-washed brick and
plaintiles; 2-light small-paned casement windows with arched heads to
