Almshouse group . Circa 1912 by Sir Ernest George. Red brick with red brick quoins
and dressings, moulded wooden eaves cornice to hipped plain tiled roofs. End stacks.
2 storeys. 5 bays, the central 3 divided by a rusticated brick pilaster. Casement
windows on both floors in outer bays, balconies on first floor in central three bays.
The outer pair blocked at time of resurvey. Three arched entrances below, the centre
one leading to a 2-flight stair with iron balustrade.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
