Whiteley Village

GV II

Almshouse row. Circa 1912 by Sir Mervyn Macartney. Red brick with eaves cornice
to swept , hipped, plain tiled roof, hipped projections over projecting bays
below and two ridge stacks. Central block at angle to corner of octagon with wings
set at 22½ degrees to centre. Central arch flanked by oculi. Projecting outer bays
with large 8-light casement in each, flanked by recessed entrances containing a
casement window and board door.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
