Whiteley Village

Almshouse row. Circa 1912 by Sir Aston Webb. Red brick with some wooden window
bressumers and plain tiled roofs. End stacks. The building is canted at 45
degrees about a central, tile hung return gable surmounting a shallow 2 storey
projection in the angles. 2 storeys, 1 storey and attics to wings under 2 hipped
semi-dormers. 5 bay centre casements. Central first floor balcony with wooden
bressumer over and balustrade panelled with pantiles . Flanking balcony openings
glazed at time of resurvey. Square headed, wide, central entrance with gauged
head and 2 rubbed brick freestanding Tuscan columns. Narrower square headed
entrance with flat hood in outer bays. All doors boarded.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
