Whiteley Village

GV II

Almshouse group. Circa 1912. Red brick with rusticated quoins. Plain tiled swept
hipped roof with rusticated end stacks. Single storey with attic under central
thermal dormer. Central block at an angle to the octagon with end projections canted
at 22½ degrees from the main block. Irregular 7 casement window front with entrance
in left and projection.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
