Whiteley Village

10/318 Administration Block

GV II

Administration block. Circa 1937 by Maurice Webb. Red brick with plain tiled,
steeply pitched hipped roof rising over cross wings at ends. 2 tall diagonal
stacks to left and right of centre. Symmetrical. Single storey with one 4-light
sash window flanked by two 3-light sashes to either side of centre. End bays set
back, each containing one sash window, all with tiled cills. Brick tile twisted
piers to ends and either side of central bay on square pedestals. Centre, recessed
quadrant entrance bay containing half glazed door in 3-step brick surround.
Whiteley Village was provided by Wil1iam Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
