Gate Piers to Portmore Estate
19.10.51
II

Gate piers. Late C17; restored 1997. Trophy finials probably carved by John Nost to the design of William Talman. Set of 4 square ashlar piers, the inner pair taller, with Doric pilasters to west and east sides and surmounted by trophy finials; the outer pair shorter and linked by brick quadrant walls to brick piers, all outer piers surmounted by new ball finials. The elaborately carved trophy finials, on their west and east sides, each have a shield with profile bust below helmet with feathered crest all in drapery surround. The north finial is a replica; the south finial restored.
