10/184 Greathed Manor
Country House. 1862-1868 by Robert Kerr. Coursed wealdstone with ashlar
dressings, slate roofs of varying types, some hipped, with tall stone stacks
decorated with corbels. Asymmetrical rambling plan, 3 storeys with 4 stage
to right of entrance. Entrance front:- principal features include tower to
right with pierced guoillche balustrade, large bracketed eaves and stone mosaic
inlay to top stage. Stone mullioned and transome window to 3rd stage. Square
date panel inscribed "Ford 1862" with floral decoration. Angle bay to left under
dormer and pavilion roof. Shaped roundel gable to left again with strapwork
Coat of Arms. Large Dutch gabled bay with angle bay below rising through 2
floors. Break back to centre of front with square bay containing steep gable
over 5 light window projecting over coved support. Further bay to left set back
with thick projecting cornice over second floor. Square bay breaking forward
to left with angle bay on ground floor. Further break forward to left with
french pavilion roof to left end. 2 storey range attached and set back on left
end enclosing small courtyard.
Garden front:- Similar long rambling composition with shaped gable bays, ogee
dome and turret to left of centre and apsidal end to dining room projecting
on ground floor to right of centre.
Interior:- Some panelling surviving on ground floor room to rear left. Ceiling
with random moulded panels. Twisted columns to fireplace surrounds.
Robert Kerr was an influential house designer in the mid-late 19th century and
author of The English Gentlemen's House.
