Church Cottage



Cottage.Late C16 2 bay timberframed house of 1 storey with framed smoke hood
in smaller bay with early C17 2 bay parlour wing with chimney rising through
earlier smoke hood bay, clad in brick in C19. Original part of the house is
in English bond brickwork with tiled roof and C19 casements. The early C17
parlour wing is of early C19 brickwork in Flemish bond with tiled roof and
tall brick chimneystack. 2 storeys and attics in gable end; 2 windows C19
casements with cambered heads. Early C20 gabled brick porch at the junction
of the 2 wings. Later weatherboarded outshut to rear. Interior of earliest wing
has a green port roof which contains remains of the original wattle and daub
chimney with brick nogging and nailed studs. Sooting on the pegged timbers
beyond the later stair. The parlour wing contains a wider staircase and chamfered
spine beam with lambs tongue steps and carved bracket to main post. Ground floor
room has early C19 wooden fire surround with brackets and cupboard recess C19
plank doors to parlour and best bedrooom. This house was believed to be the
residence of early incumbents of the adjoining Parish church. Before the
Dissolution the land belonged to Newark Priory but was leased to
Sir Edward Newly Chaplain of Pirbright. They were vested in the crown under a
statute of Edward VI in 1547.
