2/43 Former Conservatory,
24/10/84 approx 10 metres west of
Merrow Grange (formerly
listed as part of
Rockwork Grotto).

GV II

Conservatory. Circa 1907 by James Pulham and Son. Pulhamite stone i.e. clinker
with Portland cement poured over it and sandstone blocks with cast iron and glazed
roof over. Subterranean conservatory with only the remains of the roof above
ground. Oval grotto chamber connected to further chamber with entrances at ends
by way of spiral stairs; terrazzo and tiled floors. Skeleton of glazed oval roof
over main chamber with glass now gone. In some disrepair at time of resurvey; the
conservatory probably unique among Pulhamite Constructions. One of a number of
garden features laid out in the grounds of Merrow Grange.
Merrow Grange Gardens included in Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic
Interest in England (Part 40 - Surrey) as Grade II.
Now in grounds of Fairlawns, Lauston Close (10 metres north of Fairlawns).
