Cottage row. Circa 1880 possibly by R. Norman-Shaw. Red-brown brick below on
rubble stone plinth to right where ground drops away; glazed black brick course
to top of plinth. Tile hung to right on first floor, timber framed with white-
washed render infill to first floor centre. Plain tiled half-hipped roofs.
Symmetrical plan with projecting end cross wings. Two storeys with diagonal
brick dentils over the ground floor of the end wings, first floor jettied between
across the centre on moulded bressumer. Four-square corbelled stack to centre,
further stacks to front re-entrant angles and to rear. Half-hipped roofs over
end wings with diagonal brick eaves cornice to left, scalloped-edge bargeboards
to right. One 5-light mullioned and transomed window on the first floor of each
wing, that to left under a cambered head. One leaded 4-light window on ground
floor of each wing. One mullioned and leaded 5-light half-dormer window to either
side of centre on first floor; small 2-light leaded casements in first floor
re-entrant angles. Mullioned and transomed canted bay window to ground floor
right of centre, square bay window left of centre; both with moulded transoms
and lintels. Segmentally-arched heads over doors in angle re-entrants to left and
right (Nos 2 and 3); that to right half-glazed over lower panels, that to left
panelled and with diagonal boarding. Gabled set back bays to ends with further
arched-head doors (Nos 1 and 4). R. Norman Shaw built several houses on the
Portsmouth Road although A. Saint regards The Valley as being more likely the work
of one of his pupils.
