GV II
House. 1930-33 by Oliver Hill for Wilfred Grove in the International Modern style,
a rebuild of a Philip Webb house. Whitewashed stucco with flat roofs obscured by
parapets. Two storeys, stepping down to right and rear in a series of flat roof
"terraces" to single storey height. Metal casement fenestration under thin drip
mouldings to left, continuing as string courses, and to right where window on each
floor wraps around curved corner. The dominant feature of the entrance front is
a large curved staircase window rising through one and a half storeys. Doors to
left. Circular drum section to roof left of centre.
interior:- plain simple rooms with main spiral stair around central pillar newel
intact.
One of Oliver Hill's most noted examples of the International Modern Style.
