Tortoise house. Circa 1820-30. Portland stone, rubblestone and brick with
wooden superstructure and tiled roof. Rectangular. Two storeys. Ionic garden
temple of four bays by two with three Ionic columns to sides and Ionic pilaster
piers to ends supporting architrave frieze and cornice. Upper storey with open
sides divided into bays by thin wooden piers with attached Corinthian pilasters.
Flat roof over with overhanging eaves. The upper floor of the house appears to
have been used as viewing platform for the tortoises which lived in a pool in
the front of the temple. Now in ruinous and near roofless condition. One of
the items mentioned in the Gardens of Wotton House included in the "Register of
Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England: Part 40 Surrey" at
Grade II*.
