6/148 Old Swaynes Farm House

House. C16, possibly with earlier origins, with C17 and C18 extensions. Timber framed
with whitewashed brick and render infilling on ends and across rear. Whitewashed
render on entrance front. Parallel range plain tiled roofs, C20, with half-hip ends to
entrance range. House of 2 builds, parallel and staggered. 2 storeys, with offset end
stack to right and rebuilt stack to left. C20 leaded casement fenestration with
4 windows on the first floor, 3 windows below. Half-glazed C19 door to left of centre
in gabled, boarded, porch with braced posts. Right hand return front (gable end) -
half-glazed pentice extension across ground floor, gunstock main post to eaves right.
Gable end of parallel range set back to right. Rear elevation:- 3 framed bays of
modest scantling. 2 windows on first floor, one window below. Half-glazed door to
right of centre under pentice hood on braces. Interior:- Frame exposed with gunstock
main posts on first floor of rear range. Splat baluster balustrade incorporated into
wall in hallway. Further details of timber frame and raking queen post and crown post
roof trusses given in DBRG Report. (Surrey Domestic Building Research Group, Report No
3376.) The house was reputedly the home of Ben Jonson.
