TQ/15/NW (north side)
Fetcham House

House. Early C19; slightly altered. Colour-washed roughcast, probably on brick;
slate roof. Rectangular double-depth plan under 2-span roof. Two storeys and 5
bays; the symmetrical facade has a central doorway (up 4 steps) framed by
prominent pilasters with entablatures and a moulded cornice, and a 6-panel door
with traceried overlight (oval crossed by diagonals); four 12-pane sashed windows
at ground floor and five 9-pane sashes above; projecting eaves and hipped 2-span
roof with 2 chimneys between the ridges. The left return wall has a 2-storey
canted bay to the rear, with three 12-pane sashes on each floor. The rear has a
door with margin panes and an overlight like that at the front, and 12- and 9-
pane sashed windows unsymmetrically disposed. Interior not inspected. Dr Thomas
Monro (1759-1833), patron of artists, entertained Turner, Girtin and De Wint
amongst others, at this house.
