urns approx 150 metres
south of house at
Polesden Lacey

GV II

Terrace retaining wall with ha-ha and pedestals with urns. Probably begun 1761
(said to be dated on foundation wall); extended c.1800 for Richard Brinsley
Sheridan. Forms the southern boundary of the garden to Polesden Lacey, with a
retaining wall of limestone rubble approximately 500 metres long from east to
west, and approximately 1½ metres high (with a "parapet" of yew hedging); the
eastern half has a projecting central box and equidistant rectangular bays, each
of these containing a large gadrooned urn on a high pedestal.
