GV II

Footbridge linking 2 islands in River Mole. Probably later C18, and perhaps by
'Capability' Brown. Flint. Single segmental span, with crudely rusticated
voussoirs, a large inverted scallop shell in place of the keystone, and a similar
shell in the spandrel at each side. History: built as an ornamental feature of the
grounds of Thorncroft Manor (q.v.), which were laid out, and the island created,
by 'capability' Brown. Also known as "Shell Bridge".
