CASTLE HILL
(West Side)
Garden walls to gardens
east and north of The Grange)

II*

The garden consists of a series of formal enclosures probably in their original
form. The most notable are the main walled enclosure to the east and a subsidiary
enclosure to the north.
An C18 wall of brick with brick capping surrounds on all sides the main enclosure
to the east of the house. The wall across the east end of this is punctuated
in the centre by square panelled brick gate piers with moulded stone caps
and by a rich wrought iron gate of early C18 date which is of bar and scroll
pattern with pyramid scroll overthrow in the centre. This gateway is flanked
to either side by 2 bays of blank brickwork and then to either side by a smaller
round headed opening with early C18 wrought iron grille. The side grilles
and central gateway afford vistas of Farnham Park across the road. There is
another gateway with wrought iron gate and overthrow in the north wall of this
enclosure, and a gateway, with gate missing, in the corresponding bay in the
south wall. A further gateway, with gate, is found in the west wall, to the
south of the house. In the west well, to the right hand of the house, a gateway
[gate missing but flanked by brick gate piers] leads into the subsidiary enclosure
to the north. In the west wall of this enclosure, there are recesses at either
end, the left hand one containing a small wrought iron grille.
