No 4l Castle Street 1866; Nos 39 and 40 a little earlier. Built by F C Birch
(see N Temple, "Farnham Buildings and People'). 2 3-storey blocks of yellow
brick now painted over in Nos 40 and 4l. Slate roofs. Stringcourses, and,
in Nos 39 and 40, quoins. Windows and doors have plain stone surrounds now
painted in Nos 40 and 41. Arched doorways and slightly arched ground and
lst floor windows. Small cast iron flower guards to 1st floor windows. Harsh
but has effective group value.

All the listed buildings, with Nos 1 to 9 (consec) Lowndes Buildings, in Castle
Street (West Side) form a group.
