House. Dated 1894 and 1895. By E Lutyens for Gertrude Jekyll. Bargate rubble-
stone, timber frame with plaster infill; tile hanging. Plain tile roof.
Irregular plan, 2 storeys. Entrance (road) front: asymmetrical 2 bays, the
right bay under gable with roof continuing down on right over outshut with
entrance. Stone plinth below timber framing which has large square panels, some
close studding and some large curved braces. Outshut on right has internal
porch with wooden benches, inner board door and open 5-light window with
diamond-set mullion to right return. Gabled bay has a 4-light window on each
floor with ogee-moulded wooden mullions and leaded lights, that on the 2nd floor
shorter; to right of ground floor is stone dated 1894 with initials 'GJ'. Left
bay has similar 2-light window on right below tile hanging. Tall corniced brick
stack in roof slope between left-hand bays. Rear: stone ground floor with
windows at left side, off centre, of 4 lights, and at higher level to right of
this a small single-light window; window and recessed doorway on right under
catslide roof; tile-hung first floor with 6-light window under pentice; tall,
ribbed, brick stack to left roof slope. Left return: blind, stone, ground
floor; tile-hung first floor has 2 windows, as before, of 2 and 4 lights set at
different levels and under pentices. Right return: roof comes down low with
door breaking eaves under gablet. Interior: board doors; plain brick fire-
places. The house was built for Miss Jekyll's Swiss gardener.
