18/6/86 Oak Cottage


House. Early-mid C16, refaced and extended in C19. Timber framed core reclad
to front in whitewashed brick, frame part exposed on first floor to rear with
whitewashed brick infill. Plain tiled roof, hipped to left. Two storeys, two
framed bays with offset brick stack to right end and further stack to rear left.
Two C19 casement windows on the first floor one ground casement to left. Glazing-
bar sash window to right. Ribbed door to left under open gable hood, further
similar door to centre/right. Left hand return front: one glazing-bar sash window
to the first floor, casement window below. Rear: C19 bread oven attached to stack.
Interior: Frame largely intact with only part of the central posts missing. Ceil-
ing frames exposed in ground-floor rooms with chamfered spine beams and joists.
Deep brick fireplace to right-hand room with carved foliage scrolls on the lintel
and attached Tuscan columns flanking, supporting cast iron lamp holders from the
capitals. Jowled angle posts exposed on first floor, that to left end with tension
bracing, and all wall plates on the first floor chamfered with steep end stops.
Roof structure intact with both end gablet trusses, separated by only three rafters,
intact and all sooted, indicating a possible open hall. One of the smallest, and
most complete hall houses in Surrey.
