25.2.52 Castle Precincts imd right wing
(formerly listed as adjoining Coachhouse)
GV II

House. Early-mid C18, partly on late C1l or early C12 foundations, raised in
late C18 or early C19 and altered in later C19. Mathematically-tiled on
brick plinth on ground and first floors with plain tilehung second floor.
Plain tiled hipped roof, with tall projecting end stacks. 3 storeys; regular
3 window second floor and regular 5 window first floor, all glazing bar sashes
in open boxes. Irregular ground floor with sash to left, rendered flat-
roofed extension to right of centre with canted bay and half-glazed door
under timbered and gabled porch to left of centre. Irregular extensions to
right and rear, backing onto Castle Lane. Vaulting under Castle Precincts
would appear to be the sole remaining part of the domestic buildings of
Lewes Castle. Section of wall visible with late C11 or early C12 of flints
of large size laid in courses of herringbone pattern.
