1850 by Decimus Burton. Built as a seaside villa for his friend John Ward, for
whom Burton had already built a house in Calverley Park, Tunbridge Wells. Italianate
villa style. Coursed stone. Chamfered quoins, plain stone architraves and bands.
Low-pitched slate roofs with eaves on stone console brackets. 2 storeys and attic
and basement. Asymmetrical. South-east elevation facing garden: right-hand projects
and left hand end ashlar 2-storeyed bay with 2 and 3-light round-headed windows,
on left ground floor verandah, with ogee-shaped canopy, 3 flat-headed dormers.
South-west side facing road, pedimental gable end with chimney breast rising through,
flanked by 2 round-headed attic windows, porch set back to left with round arch
and cornice on large consoles, to left again a 3-storeyed tower with low-pitched
pyramidal roof with wide eaves on stone brackets and tripartite round-headed 2nd
floor window.
