Listing Text

Main barn, Wickhurst Farm
TQ 63 NW
Double barn. C18. Timber frame on red brick plinths, weatherboard cladding, hipped
plain tile roof. Two phases: a four bay threshing barn with a further five bay
threshing barn added to the west. The east barn has opposing wagon entries in the
third bay from the east with a projecting wagon porch with hipped roof on the north
side; a lean to cart shed extension with catslide roof against the two eastern bays
with entry at the east end. The west barn has opposing wagon entries to the central
bay and a similar projecting wagon porch with hipped roof; a short leanto extension
under a catslide roof between the porch and the adjoining dairy and cattle shed range
on the west side of the yard. A pair of vertical boarded doors to each wagon porch.
Both barns have jowelled bay posts, central end posts, with a single intermediate
rail between all posts and tension braces and studs in the panels. Queen post
trusses with angle braces to posts and clasped purlins. An inserted hayloft in the
west bays of the west barn. The threshing floor in the east barn flanked by raking
stays between sole plates and door posts and retaining boards.
