C15 or C16. Formerly Crown Commercial Inn. Timber-framed, Refronted in C18
with brick, painted white. Partially slate-hung behind. Hipped tile roof, Red
brick chimneys,
3 storeys. Brick modillion cornice. Parapet.
6 bays, with 3 more openings on ground floor, viz:
1. an open archway to Crown Yard, with plain chamfered bressummer.
2. modern doorway to 39A.
3. modern doorway to 41A.
Nos 37 and 39 each have 1 doorway with gabled hood over, supported on consoles,
moulded embrassures and panelled reveals.
No 41 has 1 doorway with panelled reveals, and a modern shopfront.
On north side of doors toNos 37, 39 and 41 are 3-light canted bays on both ground
and 1st floors: plate glass on ground floor level, double-hung sashes with glazing
bars at 1st floor level.
Remaining windows on 1st and 2nd floors are double-hung sashes with glazing bars,
that over No 41 tripartite. The 2 windows at the north end of the 2nd floor are
blocked.
No 37 has a 2-storey extension to west. Early C19. Painted brick. Pitched tile
roof. The 1st floor of the south elevation has a continuous band of mullion and
transom industrial windws. The ground floor has 1 segment-headed planked door,
and 1 segment-headed casement window. At west end there is a modern balcony to
1st floor.
No 4lA has a 2 storey extension to west. Early C19. Beach flint. Red brick
dressings. Pitched tile roof. South elevation has 2 planked doors with segmental
heads on ground floor, 1 loft door on 1st floor, and 2 segment-headed casement
windows wit glazing bars on each floor. Other west extensions masked by these;
but they are timber-framed and have half-hipped tile roofs.
In the C18 the Crown Inn belonged to the Shelleys of Michelgrove, and was the
political centre of the Tory party in Arundel.

Nos 27 to 33 (odd) and Nos 37 to 43 (odd) form a group.
