11/30

The Old Toll Gate

II

Early C19 toll-house. The portion facing the road is faced with stucco, scored to
resemble masonry. The first floor originally oversailed, with an enriched frieze
above it, but has been underbuilt. Two round turrets with castellated parapet
between. Two storeys. Pointed recess on first floor. One window below. To the
south is an L-shaped residential portion, probably added later, of two storeys, faced
in flints and red brick with a slate roof and casement windows.
