1849-50. J Butler, architect. Built as a Church of England training college
for male teachers. Building therefore shows collegiate and monastic influences.
Stone coursed. Slate roofs. Some French Medieval influence. South front has
cloister walk on ground floor; 9 bays. Wide unglazed openings in each bay
with tracery. Single light windows above these with windows of 2 lights, at
ends. In centre, on slate roof, octagonal bell-cote with weathervane. In
central bay on 1st floor 4 light oriel window with cartouche (bearing arms)
and foliated design, below. Below this, steps lead up to 4-centred doorway
in square frame with telling inscribed plaque over. Stringcourses above
ground and 1st floors; parapet. To the west of these, 9 bays, and project-
ing slightly forward, 1 very wide bay with gable above 1st floor, and further
west again, a bay with large projecting chimney. At east end, a north-south
wing of 5 bays with gables over 3 lst floor windows (cloister walk continues
in this wing, although windows are glazed) 5th bay from north is very large
as it comprises western end of the Chapel (now no longer a chapel but used
as a library) which runs eastwards from here. South front of Chapel has 6
bays, and in 2 of them, windows with curvilinear tracery. West front again
of 2 storeys (with attic.) 6 bays. Stone coursed. Parapet. Slate gabled
roof with parapet rising up sides of roof. Southernmost 3 bays with much
higher frontage. In southernmost bay windows of 2 and 3 lights on 1st and
ground floors respectively; with cusped heads in square frames with grooved
spandrels and dripstones over. (Each light comprising 1 sash window).
Pointed gable (with 1 attic window) above 1st storey. 1 2 light window in
2nd bay of similar design. Below this, steps lead up to 4 centred arched
doorway set in square frame with moulded jambs. 3rd bay from south has 3
sided canted bay projecting through both storeys: 5 lights in each storey
of a design similar to those further south. Stringcourse above 1st floor
windows and parapet. Northernmost part of 3 window bays has much lower
frontage. Windows of 2 light (3 lights in 4th bay from south) with pointed
heads set in square frames with grooved spandrels and dripstones over.
East-west wing with lower frontage and higher tiled roof projects forward
at northern end: 1 window bay in western end (3 in depth). An east-west
wing runs behind west front so that there is an internal courtyard, between
south, west and north wings.
