Originally a narrow court of which the east side was converted into shops
in the early Cl9; a high wall being built at the same time to divide the 2
ranges (for east range see Nos 17-23 South Street).
C15 with later mostly C18 addition and C18 extension behind. 2 storeys.
Roughly 4 bays each. The east front has been plastered. Red tiled roofs.
No 3 has a gable with 2 windows in it. No 1 has a blocked entrance with trefoil
headed arch at south end, and blocked 3 centred opening at north end. No 3
has blocked C13 opening at south end; another opening discovered in original west
wall of house; and also a 2 light trefoiled window at north end. No 4 has
a similarly headed window of 1 light on 1st floor. 6 panelled door with top 2
panels cut away and glazed (except for No 3). No 2 has doorway with columned
shafts, and frieze with diamond and quatrefoil panels over; trellised porch.
No 3 has 4-centred stone doorway. No 4 has C18 doorway in moulded frame with
pediment over it. Inside, in front range, C15 or earlier king-post roof;
wattle and daub infilling. Part of a wall painting uncovered in No 3 in space
between collar beam and tie beam in 2nd room from north on first floor; roundels
in red earth on white background.
