4/108 Summerhouse/Teahouse
and Section of Wall

East of Butlers Green
Summerhouse/Teahouse and wall. C18 or early C19. Red brick structure of one
storey with stone quoins, the roof replaced with corrugated iron sheeting.
South side has central projecting entrance with pediment above. Doorcase with
rectangular fanlight. 2 sashes. West side (facing house) has crenellated parapet
and Gothick window. To the north is a section of wall incorporating entrance
with rusticated piers, segmental arch with keystone and gable masquerading as
pediment. The wall is of English Garden bond at the bottom but has an unusual
bond above of 2 headers and 1 stretcher but arranged so that the stretchers are
above each other on alternate rows. Red brick stretchers and vitrified headers.
This incorporates a garden feature with Gothick windows and flat gauged brick
head alcove with quoins and crenellations. Attached to the east forming an
L-shape is a section of red brick walling having brick buttresses and plinth and
incorporating segmental arch.
Parts of this item appear stylistically C18 but are not shown on the engraving
of 1787.
