II*
House. Building on site mentioned in 1279 and foundations may relate to this,
but existing building is a late C16 lobby entrance house of fine quality with
early C17 parlour wing added to south, later C17 extension to west with late
C19 alterations and further extension of c1960 to rear in matching materials
but not of special interest. 2 storeys and attics. North part has ground floor
of red brick with some exposed framing on Sussex sandstone plinth, the 1st floor hung
with alternate courses of pointed and curved tiles. Roof of Horsham stone slabs
with cruciform and filleted brick chimney stack in centre of ridge. Projecting
wing to south has exposed framing, tiled gable and C20 2-storey projecting window.
Massive C17 external chimney stack, sandstone to base and brick to top. 3 other
modern casement windows, 1 hipped dormer and late C19 stone 4 centred arched
door. West elevation has 3 gables, 2 of which are tile hung with alternate
courses of curved and pointed tiles. The Dining Room has a ceiling with spine
beam and joists all having lambs tongue stops. Hall retains C17 framing. The
1st floor has jowled posts and late C16 square framing. There is another ceiling
with lambs tongue stops and a powder closet retaining a hatch for transferring
a wig through the bedroom to the maid in the powder closet. There is a fine
series of old planked doors, some with elaborate architrave mouldings and some
2 panelled doors. Roof of queen post construction with carpenter's marks.
Graded II* despite alterations for frame of high quality and survival of rare
internal features.
