listed as Memorial Methodist
G.V. Church)
Non-conformist church; Sunday School now social centre; and minister's house. 1889-91
by F.R.N. Haswell for Wesleyan Methodists at expense of J.Robinson in memory of
daughter Elizabeth. Restored 1981 for North Tyneside Memorial Church.
Snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings; Lakeland slate roofs with stone gable
copings and ornamental ridge tiles. Church: aligned north-south on corner site.
Tower at ritual north-west. Aisled nave with south-west apsidal-ended chapel;
transepts; chancel with porches. Paired recessed 2-centred arches to doors under
4-light west window with pink granite nook shafts; 3-stage tower has gargoyles to
pierced parapet; octagonal stair turret continues to higher level. 2-storey aisles
have 3 buttressed bays; 2-storey transepts have paired gables. 2 tall lancets to
chancel and each of 3 sides of east apse. Angle buttresses with spirelets. Steeply-
pitched roofs. Interior: plaster with ashlar dressings above boarded dado; cast
iron columns; hammer-beam roof. Stiff-leaf capitals to gallery arcades on 3 sides;
ball-flower capitals to tapered columns above; high chamfered chancel arch. Pierced
arcaded parapet to wide central pulpit, flanked by vestry doors down steps, and organ
loft. Most original fittings survive.
Sunday school now social centre: one-storey link from church entrance to hall
at right with gable facing street. Double boarded door under 2-centred arch in link;
buttress between pairs of triple lancets under cinquefoil window in gable.
Minister's house in similar materials and style at rear right return included
for group value.
