North Shields.
Church of St. Columba
Non-conformist church. 1853-8 by John Dobson for the Anti-Burgher Society; later
Presbyterian. Sandstone ashlar central block; brick wings with rendered plinth,
ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins. Welsh slate roof. L-plan. Palladian style.
Central block of 2 storeys, 5 bays. Wings of basement and 2 storeys, 3 bays.
Central block: 3 steps to central recessed double door under canopy; half-glazed
door and overlight in fifth bay. Rusticated ground floor has recessed panels below
sashes with glazing bars in deep recesses: arcaded first floor has round-headed
windows with wood mullions and transoms. Dentilled cornice and balustraded
parapet; 2 corniced ashlar end chimneys. Wings have sash windows, with late C19
glazing bars, in bracketed architraves. Eaves band and gutter cornice; hipped roof
with banded brick chimneys. 6-bay left wing return in similar style.
