Tomb: headstone and gravecover of Richard Dawes, headmaster of Newcastle
Grammar School, died 1766. Sandstone headstone; natural basalt boulder grave-
cover. Headstone has trophy over inscription. Grave cover has inset bronze
plaque: THE BURIAL PLACE OF RICHARD DAWES M.A. AUTHOR OF THE CELEBRATED WORK
INTITLED MISCELLANEA CRITICA. LET NO MAN MOVE HIS BONES. Historical note:
boulder and inscription placed in 1822 by John Hodgson, rector of St. Mary's.
