9/11 Main Dike stone.


Marker stone. Sandstone ashlar. Circa 1828. Round-topped slab about 1½ metres high inscribed on east MAIN/DIKE/distance/from Pit/349 yards/ Cut 3 June/1828. On rear MAIN/DIKE.
Historical note: the main or 90 fathom dike was a serious obstacle to coalmining
in Northumberland. An underground ball was held to commemorate this event; each
guest hewed a souvenir piece of coal. Source: R. Welford History of the Parish
