G.V. I
Column monument with statue. 1838 by Benjamin Green; statue by Baily. Erected
by public subscription to commemorate the efforts of Charles Earl Grey K.G.
towards parliamentary reform. Sandstone ashlar; marble statue. About 135 ft.
high. Tall panelled pedestal, with inscription on south and door in west,
supports.Roman Doric column with top balcony. Heroic size statue of Grey in
robes stands on tall corniced square pedestal. Inscription on north commemorates
the centenary of the passing of the 1832 Reform Bill.
