Guildhall, Town Court and Merchant Venturers' Hall; fishmarket added. Now hall,
Freeman's Hall and offices. 1655 by Trollope; 1794 refronted by Stephenson and
Newton; 1823 east end by Dobson; C19 alterations. Sandstone ashlar; Welsh slate
roof; weatherboarded turret with lead-covered dome, 3 storeys; 5-bay entrance
block with left, linking bay, then a 9-bay section curving round to river front;
5 bays at right. Palladian-style entrance block has central projection with
round-arched door flanked by round-headed niches; continuous ground-floor
cornice. Giant Ionic Order above contains round-arched first-floor windows
with flat stone lintels and sills; sill and impost strings to round-headed
first-floor windows, blind at right; flat stone lintels and sills to second-
floor windows. Most windows sashes with glazing bars. Wide, set-back bay at
left has ground floor framed in pilasters and entablature with triglyph frieze;
round-arched window with voussoirs and apron. Tripartite sash above and small
top sash wider cornice and blocking course. 9-bay fishmarket on ground floor:
unfluted Greek Doric colonnade, now blocked and aproned sashes with late C19
glazing inserted; triglyph frieze. Upper windows sashes with glazing bars in
architraves, those on first floor longer and with cornices. Top cornice and
blocking course. 5 bays to right of entrance have added ground-floor projections
of Tuscan pilasters with vermiculate lower panels flanking tripartite aproned
sashes; cornice and parapet. Upper floors have sashes in plain reveals. Top
cornice and blocking course. Hipped roof has octagonal. turret with low dome and
wind-vane finial;' rendered chimneys, some ashlar-corniced. Flat, 2-storey 9-bay
river front has arcaded ground floor and upper floor with Roman Doric Order.
Round-headed windows, those on first floor with interlace heads. Interior shows
court with double hammerbeam roof; rusticated galleries. Mayor's parlour has
panelled walls, some panels painted with local scenes. Merchant Venturers'
Court rebuilt by Dobson incorporating large C17 chimney piece with carved
overmantel. Staircase niche has statue of Charles I in Roman tunic.
