Statue. 1862 by J. G. Lough, Sandstone and bronze. Wide square step to heavily
rusticated plinth and tapered octagonal pedestal supporting seated heroic figure of
George Stephenson. Corner projections support four over-life-size figures representing
spheres of Stephenson's activity: miner, locomotive engineer, blacksmith and bridge
builder.
