4/31 No.4 (Angel House)


House, formerly part of inn. Early/mid C18, altered early/mid C19. Colourwashed
brick with slate roof and brick chimney. L-plan. 3-storey; 3-window range, but
originally 5 windows; remains of gauged brick flat arches with keyblocks and
traces of aprons visible. Ground floor has half-glazed door with overlight in
moulded wood surround with hood on plain brackets. To right two late C19 shop
windows with moulded pilaster strips and continuous entablature; to left 20-pane
sash. First floor has 16-pane sashes. Second floor windows with brick flat
arches. To rear long C18/early C19 irregular brick wing. Interior: Central
passage with panelled dado, and arches to staircase. Early/mid C18 staircase
with narrow open well and winders, and turned balusters. C19 two-light Gothic
staircase window. Panelled doors, some with H-L hinges. C18 fireplaces. No.4 and
No. 5 were the Angel Inn until 1865.
