Former inn, now shops and offices. Late C16 (VCH); refronted mid/late C19.
Timber framed with lath and plaster infill; front red brick. C20 tile roof; no
chineys visible. L-plan. 2 storeys and attic; 3-window range. C19 double shop
front has central plank door and overlight with glazing bars, and shallow
fascia. On left plank door to through passage. First floor has 16-pane sashes
with rusticated rendered flat arches with keyblocks. 2 hipped dormers with
sashes. To rear exposed framing and jowled posts. Short wing with gable. Long 2
storeys and attic wing beyond. Old plank door with stained glass panel. Old
ribbed and studded door. Irregular fenestration; some original window openings
with moulded wood mullions, and old leaded light casements. C19 and C20
casements. 2 dormers, on left a substantial structure. Interior: Much exposed
framing and ceiling beams throughout. Ground floor room to rear has 3-bay
enriched plaster ceiling; each bay has 3 moulded square panels, each with Tudor
rose, 4 roses and shields, and flower patterns. Beams with mouldings and scroll
ornament. Straight flight staircase has landing with late C16/early C17 turned
balusters and octagonal newel posts with acorn finials. Late C16/C17
six-panelled doors.
