Country house. C15 origins; middle range c.1540-1550; C16 wings; rear wing added
and alterations C17; C18 alterations, Central range of dark red English bond
brick with diapering of dark blue headers. Wings timber framed: close studding,
square framing and ornamental panelling with lath and plaster and brick infill.
Old tile roofs; brick stacks. Double-ended hall house plan, but with part of
right wing missing; through-passage. 2 storeys and attic; 4-window range.
Central range has 2-storey gabled porch on right. Chamfered painted stone
4-centred arch. Inside 4-centred oak doorway and 8-panelled door with moulded
ribs, possibly C16, and strap hinges; set in square reveal with wood lintel.
First floor has stone chamfered mullioned window of 3 arched lights with
alternate blocked surround. Timber framed gable with chamfered bressumer.
Leaded-light casement and wood mullioned and transomed windows throughout. To
left. 7-light hall window has thin mullions, Rendered block surround, First
floor has similar window. Lower cross wing on left has close studding with
fowled posts and lath and plaster in-fill, underbuilt in C18 English bond red
brick. 5-light window, with 3-light window above. Shallow wood and tile hood
across ground floor. Wall plates with brackets. Wing on right is set back.
Partly underbuilt in C20 brick with C20 casement. First floor has exposed
framing with brick infill and 3-light casement. Complex half-hipped roof. C20
single storey timber framed lean-to. Left return side has timber framed bay
window on right, with close studding above, Large external stack of thin bricks.
on loft some close studding with lath and plaster infill on ground floor, and
square framing with brick infill above, Some square framing and 3-light dormer
in the centre, Right return side of train range has some close studding and a
timber framed gable. 3-light casement. Return side of wing has wide external
stack of thin bricks with 3 renewed diagonally-set square shafts. To rear: 2
adjacent gabled wings on right, Right wing C16 with some close studding on
ground floor. Entrance to cellar. Left wing and upper floors have small framing.
irregular fenestration. central brick range has doorway in high, wide square
reveal with wood lintel. 4-centred 6-panelled moulded door and chamfered wood
surround. On first floor 2 tiny staircase lights. Single stone 4-centred light.
Timber framed gable with casement internal stack to right. Left wing has
casements. Single storey C19 brick wing, altered C20. Interior: Hall has
stop-chamfered cross beams and wall beams. Timber framed screens passage of thin
square framing, possibly C18. Open fireplace C17 double leaf 6-panelled doors.
2-panelled doors. Drawing room to left has open fireplace with cambered
chamfered beam. Late C17 panelling with large moulded panels. Small room with
similar panelling. Kitchen has 12-panelled door with moulded panels. Open
fireplace with moulded bressumer. Winder stairs with octagonal newel post. On
first floor, room, formerly top part of hall, has shallow pitched timbered
ceiling with chamfered central rib and joists. C16 moulded and chamfered
fireplace has stone jambs and wood lintel. Double-leaf 6-panelled doors. Bedroom
with exposed queen post and queen strut trusses. Closet has fine carved C17
panel, brought in from elsewhere. Other rooms with exposed framing. A house of
unusual quality and interest for its size, Forms part of a group with south-east
and south-west gatepiers and garden walls (q.v.) and stable, granary and
attached barn and animal house (q.v.).
