2/100 Former cottage and attached
barn at Stapenhall Farm
Former cottage, now part of range of farmbuildings, and attached barn. c.1782,
with early C19 addition to left and alterations. Squared coursed limestone.
Addition of Flemish bond red brick. Old tile roof; C20 brick ridge stacks.
Cottage on left was formerly a 2-unit lobby entry plan, altered and extended to
3-unit plan. 2 storeys and attic; 2-window range. Entrance in addition has plank
door with segmental arch. C18 range has blocked central doorway with flat arch.
Window openings have wooden lintels, with part of a stone flat arch above on the
right; casements missing. Leaded light casements to left return side and rear.
Interior: open fireplace with wood surround and moulded shelf. Winder staircase
beside fireplace. Ceiling beam has run-out chamfer. C19 straight flight
staircase. Plank doors with strap hinges. First floor has stud partition and old
wide floorboards. 3-bay barn to right. Central plank doors. Vents. Queen strut
roof, raised slightly but with original timbers. Probably a farmstead built
shortly after the Enclosure Act of 1782.
