18/27 Alpha House
House, formerly public house and club. 1612 (deeds) and late C18. Timber-framed
with red brick infill and red brick. Blue/black plain-tiled roof with ridge
stack. Original plan of main range with cross-wing having end to the road. Main
range of one storey and attic. One dormer and casement, both late C20. Doorway
in re-entrant angle probably to former cross-passage. Extended on south end late
C18. Red brick. Plain-tiled roof. Cellar, and 2 storeys. 2 hung sashes to first
floor and canted bay to ground floor. Cross-wing of 2 bays and one storey and
attic. Framing exposed in side wall. Height of 3 panels to each wall. Extended
at rear late C17, also framed. Cased in red brick. Extended by one bay on the
front, late C18. Red brick Flemish bond. Cellar; 2 storeys and attic. Segmental
arch to first floor C20 wood casement. At ground floor a boarded door leads to
cellar. Interior: Main range has framing exposed in one bay. Curved bracing to
through-purlin roof. Cross-wing of 2 bays. Similar roof structure. Wall framing
more intact. Chamfered main beams.
